The first thing to understand is that making wood signs is a LOT of work. Making signs for small venues or private parties is a lot easier than making more elaborate sign designs and selling them for a huge profit. Even for the people making custom sign designs, the experience and expense are not cheap.
Many people feel like sign design and making wood signs for a reasonable amount of money is “cheap”, therefore making wood signs is considered a fun hobby. I personally really like to make stuff for myself… I don’t know where it ends, but I have a soft spot for creating things myself (especially stuff from ideas I have).
How do you make wood signs?
I have a good basic set of tools.
3. Chisel and Chisel
5. Drill Press
6. Small hammer
I use a couple of different techniques I learned from being a professional wood sign maker, and that’s just fine for me.
If you really want to make a large number of different wood and wood sign design, I would like to suggest using a Chisel tool. One thing I want to stress here is the concept of using a Chisel tool. A Chisel is NOT a saw, a Hammer is NOT a Chisel tool. These are two separate tools that will work much differently than a combination of saw and Hammer.
Here is a tutorial on all of these items.
My first attempt at using the Chisel to carve my “Dinner” sign was a terrible success. The sign was too difficult to carve with the chisel, and I had trouble finishing it off on the chisel. I had to start over with a small hammer to cut the “Garden” sign with as well as the “Kitchen” sign. The “Dinner” sign worked out surprisingly well, however, and that is all I could say for the tool itself.
I also do a lot of “cut and glue” work – it is a hobby in and of itself.
I’m using a bit of an old piece of old wooden house for this project, one I got on eBay about a year ago.
I used this piece to make various signs like the Dining Room sign above. You can see all the details I had to do on this sign from the wood pieces to the molding. It was a pain, but I like the result.
