Can I really do that?
When I think of getting to do work for my client, it’s very difficult for me to go over the options and think of what else I could do. My father used to say, “I’d like to get involved in the real world. What can I get involved with to make myself a lot of money?”
For me, I had so much fun making things for that client which I can’t get to do for other clients. I am so thankful that my father had such a deep connection with wood, and I didn’t know if I could ever do that.
Do you know how to make anything at home?
I make everything myself. I’m a professional woodworker and I make everything, from furniture to floor plans. I make everything in my living room.
Can people order you to make anything?
They can have me make something for them. They don’t give me any credit card information.
Anything in the book?
Every piece in the book is made by different people and you don’t even see anything from them. You just see someone’s description. Sometimes you see people saying ‘I made a chair from a piece of wood.’ That’s where they got it from, from a scrap piece; you don’t see the original piece. I don’t know them personally. I think it’s really interesting to see how people get things made.
Where is your office?
We have a studio next to my house. It’s a really nice studio with a wood chair. I have a closet with a leather couch. We just came up with it. It has a little desk in it and everything is lined up perfectly for my work space.
How did it start?
I first started working in advertising and advertising came to me right after I moved away from home, so there was a lot of advertising around back then. I would go in the studio and work on ads and I would try to have a really good understanding of what the job did and what makes an ad.
Is it difficult to sell your own creations or do you see things like that as part of an art form?
I really see art as the way that I can tell people about things. I love my work, and I appreciate what the process was because I get to look at the piece and see it in my own time. What can I do to make something even better than the one that I have?
