How does one actually make a picture sign out of a board like wood?
Well, the answer is to use the same methods as a wood carver and carve a piece of the proper size (usually around 8 1/2″ x 12″ x 25″) with one hand.
What do you need a sign for? A simple two piece sign like this one. It can’t be placed against the wall, but just over it. You can use it for all sorts of things like your garage door, a bulletin board, bulletin board wall, bulletin board post, mailroom or the wall of your house.
Here’s a photo of a simple (and very sturdy) wood sign. No special methods of making signs are shown. Just the two parts with a piece attached.

So that’s how you carve a sign.
See how much easier it is?! It’s a great way to show an idea, a new idea and even a little bit of “art”.
You can make wood signs using a number of techniques and materials. My favorite way to cut wood is using a carving knife, as shown here.

Can you carve in wood with a knife and a hammer?
Sure! It can be done.
A few notes on carving: Before carving a sign, you need to make sure the wood is a good “shad” type. One that holds a nice pattern. Another thing to remember is that wood will break down. As a rough rule of thumb, the thickness of the wood must be about 0.01″ less than the thickness of the body of the sign. I don’t know the exact way your sign will be made, but I would imagine that your wood will be made with a very nice shad type of wood. Just watch the photos below or ask around to see.
