San Francisco’s cultural heritage district is known internationally for its collection of Native American artifacts and the “Dolores Picasso Memorial Fountain,” named one of the world’s 100 most significant work of art because of the great influence it has had among artists, painters, sculptors, and others throughout the world.
A cultural heritage district includes a significant number of native cultural monuments, such as cedars, dolostones, tule and spruce forests, old-growth forest, historic dwellings, and Native American burial mounds. Cultural monuments in cultural heritage districts include a complete collection of tribal relics, including tribal symbols, which includes such things as pictographs, cuneiform letters, tribal emblem and animal heads and symbols. Thereafter, many cultural relics may be acquired from Native American burial mounds after a tribal burial rite has been performed.
In addition, there are some cultural areas which do not fall within the definition of a cultural property, but which can be found within a cultural heritage district. For example, the Presidio is not a cultural district, but the Golden Gate Bridge is an integral part of most San Francisco cultural heritage districts
