In December of 2010, the day after Barack Obama won reelection, I was at my brother’s house. He was hosting a wedding to mark his new union with the woman who would become his second wife in February 2010. When he got home, a note on the front door said that Barack had just won the popular vote by 2.9 million votes. It said something to the effect of “the election was close, but you win.”
My brother and I read over the note to each other, and we burst out laughing. At that moment, I knew something else had changed. We knew what had changed. We knew Barack Obama had been elected president.
The difference between 2008 and 2010 is that the Republicans are in charge, or, I fear, very much in charge. And Obama is not in charge. His record is an unembellished nightmare, his vision a blank stare and an absence of vision as a nation.
After eight years in power, I have changed parties, which means now, I am a Democrat. Not only did I vote for Barack Obama, I voted for Hillary Clinton. I was one of the voters who would do it again, and again. I would vote for someone to be president who was neither Wall Street nor establishment. I have moved my family out of Massachusetts — because as my sister pointed out, once in there you are locked out.
But now, I have joined my fellow Democrats who are supporting Gary Johnson, the Libertarian presidential nominee. In 2016, I am going to put my name in with those folks, like me, who feel we do not have enough information to make a decision. That’s because, as Johnson says — and as I agree — “This is not an election to make policy.”
We can say all we like about national security, or about immigration and the border, or about our economy, or about whether we can defend our borders, and still the choice in this election is about something else: do we elect someone who will follow through on what has been a consistent record, or someone who promises more than he delivers?
Our government should make decisions based on the best available information
