If you asked people in the 1990’s the difference between a photographer and a graphic designer, people would give you a very different answer. Graphic designers are people who create pictures to illustrate messages. For example, here’s how a few graphic designers of that time would define their job:
A graphic designer creates images that convey a concept (i.e., ‘What is the job of a designer?’).
A graphic designer works for a company and communicates its company name, brand identity, and advertising messages.
To find out, I took a look at some of the most admired logos of this 20th century:
1. The Coca-Cola logo and its predecessors
The Coca-Cola logo (above) and its predecessors form a set of eight icons. It’s not the first time the logo has been the subject of an artwork, but this one is a must-see for any designer.

The logo was designed by Thomas Naylor at his studio (naylorstudio.com). It was officially launched with a launch party at the Mayflower Hotel in New York City. In addition to designing the new logo, Naylor commissioned a number of other logos for various projects. Naylor was born in Philadelphia; his father was a graphic design professional.

To the designer’s dismay, some people objected to the name of Coca-Cola as an ‘A.’
As it happens, I grew up a proud Coke drinker, so I could personally vouch for the fact that the logo was well-executed in its first incarnation.
I did find Naylor’s use of a color palette very attractive, even if I never fell in love with the brand.
2. The Daimler logo
Daimler is a German automotive group, and its name is derived from the German words ‘diefel’ (a German word meaning ‘light’ or ‘beauty’), and the word ‘lerkel’ (a noun meaning ‘car’ or ‘car parts’). The logo was designed by the firm of
