One of the most common reasons that people give for not exercising is the fear of being overweight or obese. In the past, the fear of being overweight was only a concern for people who worked out. But over the past few years, exercise is seen as a form of risk. This is especially true in the United States. Many people are afraid of being fat if they don’t lose weight quickly, and so exercise becomes the main solution. Although exercise may reduce fat around the waist, it might not prevent weight gain, especially if people aren’t overweight or obese initially. Most studies of obesity have failed to discover any long-term effects of a low-fat diet. The reason seems to be that exercise causes the body to burn fat instead of storing it. This results in excess fat being stored around the organs, not the organs itself.

One study found that even a low-fat diet does not prevent weight gain—only weight loss. A second study found weight loss even when the dieters did have the same amount of energy intake as the diet. Both studies used a short-term intervention to check the results. The second study suggested that people should stop dieting and focus on being thin and healthy.

The results of the first study have not been repeated since the second report. It is also possible for people to lose weight even if they don’t have a lot of energy, so you still might want to consider exercise as a way to protect yourself.
