DAMASCUS (Reuters) – Syrian state television on Saturday broadcast the last live footage of a ceasefire agreed to by Syria’s three main opposition groups in Geneva, which was later broadcast live and on TV showing the rebels fighting as they claimed to control a strategic town.
The truce was brokered in Geneva by the United States and Russia during the weekend in an attempt to halt the violence following the government’s shelling of rebel-held areas in the northwest and recapture of Aleppo.
But after the last live footage of the ceasefire was aired by Syrian state television, the rebels issued a statement claiming to have taken full control of Jisr al-Shughour, a town on the Mediterranean coast about 70 km (45 miles) east of Hama.
State TV also broadcast a video of clashes on the outskirts of the town, which the rebels have been trying to capture for weeks, though government forces were also present.
The state TV statement showed scenes of rebel fighters wearing uniform and carrying weapons holding up weapons or firing weapons at civilians who were seen fleeing in panic from the town.
The rebel-held town of Jisr al-Shughour was reportedly the stronghold of an opposition figure known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, after which the town’s name means “soul of a lion”.
The state TV announcement, and a statement from rebel fighters on Twitter on Saturday evening, also included a statement that said fighters had seized the town’s water plant and water supply to the town and were preparing to move into the oil fields.
Syria’s government has repeatedly accused the rebels of making up its ceasefire agreement, while rebel negotiators dismissed the allegations.
The ceasefire would start on Monday, with it expected to last 48 hours and only for rebel-held areas.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that the truce was a “positive” step that would pave the way for a possible cessation of hostilities.
