(Reuters) – Boeing Co (BA.N) Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg told a Washington conference on Tuesday that his company could still make the C-17 military cargo plane under an aggressive turnaround plan, although some of its production could be shifted to lower-cost foreign firms.
“This is no longer a question of when,” Muilenburg told a business conference on Capitol Hill. “This is the issue of, ‘If it can be done, let’s do it.'”
Boeing has been working on a plan to make the C-17 planes, which are used mostly by foreign militaries for transporting supplies from the Middle East to northern and eastern Europe, and to bring a new generation of heavy military aircraft to the United States.
Under the plan, Boeing might still build parts such as engines and avionics for the planes at its plant in Wichita, Kansas, but possibly at lower cost than currently promised. The C-17 program includes a $4.7 billion investment by Boeing in its factory in the Wichita area, and it has previously said it would use other companies to build engines for the new military jets.
Muilenburg met with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the Boeing facility.
“We are going to give it a shot, but we also are going to take advantage of the opportunities that are out there — whether it comes from (a) foreign partner or other domestic manufacturing,” Muilenburg told an audience with business executives, state officials and lawmakers.
He said foreign manufacturers would have to prove themselves capable of operating the new engines and avionics components needed in combat zones.
A new generation of military planes for the United States could come online in the 2019.
