He’s just a bald child. He has no face, he does not need to dress in any fashion, he cannot interact with the rest of humanity whatsoever. The main character in that movie was not the bald kid. He wasn’t there until he was about three weeks into the film—what I thought was a three-week period of time for him to be a full-blown human being.”
I also asked the artist, who goes by The Penrose, if the image of a child’s bald patch was a reaction to his own face. “Yes, because my face is so uninteresting,” he said. “I do not have any hobbies, and I have no interest in playing with my hair.”
“I really do not consider myself a child,” he said. “Because I consider myself to have a pretty long head.” (The Penrose has a beard, obviously.)
The Penrose was born in 1982, and he grew up in the Bronx, New York. In fact, he’s from New Brunswick, New Jersey, which, I was told by my contact, is the same region as the “Matrix” location Neo is living with—nearby Camden, New Jersey. “Of course, that makes it a New Brunswick town,” he said, laughing. The Penrose said that his father, who was a professor of English at the University of New Brunswick, was also from New Jersey. “He would do Shakespeare,” The Penrose said with a chuckle—although, of course, he didn’t see The Matrix.
The Penrose said that he and his wife are very busy people. “We have more or less an ongoing relationship with the world because our lives are intertwined,” he said, “and as an artist, I’m constantly being reminded of my existence and my life and the world that I’ve lived in and the choices that I’ve made.”
He went on to explain:
“This is not going to be a movie about my life, this isn’t going to be a movie of my career as an artist. It’s going to be a movie about my life as an individual. And just because I don’t have a haircut doesn’t mean I have no interests. As an individual, I’m an extremely interesting person. I’m also very intelligent. I read, I listen to music, I paint. I’m very intelligent, I think, and I see a lot of color. I’m very active with
