According to YouGov/People, just 34 per cent of Britain consider themselves to be “relatively well-informed” about witchcraft and were in the past. Meanwhile, 52 per cent of those surveyed in the U.S. believe witches exist – almost triple what it was a decade ago.

According to the FBI’s 2010 National Crime Victimization Survey, there are an estimated 200,000 people per year who have become “witches” in the U.S. That’s on top of the estimated 250,000 people who were “sickened” from the practice during the previous decade.

This is all a far cry from the 1970s, when nearly 70 per cent of Americans polled described themselves and each other as familiar “witches.”

While we’re speaking in generalities, there is a distinction between actual witches, as defined by the U.S. definitions – and the “witches of the Bible.” Some denominations practice spells and witchcraft that resemble actual witchcraft practices, and other denominations don’t consider any of these practices “witches” at all.

That same survey of 2,000 adults found almost half of Americans had received a personal religious message from a witchcraft practitioner.

In some cases, religious traditions are so deeply ingrained in their people that they can only be explained through the example of Satan – even if this is true.

“The Bible doesn’t have an official position on witches,” explains Richard Brown, an attorney and author of the book Witches and Witchcraft: How Religion and the Law Intersect. “It’s the same with the Bible and Jesus. You read the books and the passages that they’re talking about and you take an understanding away. But the other thing is the very Christian Bible and the very Judeo-Christian writings really don’t have a reference to witches and magic because those were not the things they were speaking about.”
