A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander was reported to be in Syria to carry out a military training trip
A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander was in Syria to carry out a military training trip, Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reported from Tehran.
The commander, Brigadier General Sajad Akbarzadeh, arrived in Damascus on Saturday along with his two generals.
The military had previously reported in an interview that Akbarzadeh trained Syrian soldiers in the use of modern weapons.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has reportedly trained and mentored thousands of pro-regime troops in Iran and abroad, making them an important partner in the anti-regime struggle.
Iran is conducting a crackdown on Islamic militants in Iraq’s western Anbar province, where Sunni insurgents were fighting security forces for control of Fallujah and Ramadi, but Kurdish leadership and the US-led coalition are backing its efforts.
The US is sending up to four helicopters and two light attack helicopters to operate as advisers to the Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga forces who are battling to retake the cities.
The US is also sending several thousand military advisers to support Iraqi security forces and Iraqi Kurdistan’s security forces.
US troops are not involved in the fighting, but are providing intelligence and equipment support.
