One of the most shocking images of the week might have been those of thousands of people marching through the streets of Ferguson, Mo. over the weekend in a massive protest against a grand jury’s decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson for the shooting of Michael Brown. The photos of the people with their fists raised and the people standing in the street, watching them with their heads bowed, were so heart-rending that the hashtag #FergusonUnites was born, and was picked up by a handful of major media outlets. But these photos don’t show the real life of the people the protests were supposed to have been about. A photo from Wednesday night’s live broadcast of ABC’s George Stephanopoulos and Brian Ross, and a few others from the march, show much different images from the ground. Here’s one of the photos taken by Jonathan Martin:
ABC News: “Here’s the footage of the protest that I’m just going to let you see—it was taken from the side of the main street.” Martin had no interest in being on camera, but he had a lot more cameras than I have. He has a couple more on his car and we can see him get in, move to the front, and move from there. He walks over to the photographer and he says, “Oh, we got one right here,” pointing to a street. So the photographer got up and started recording.
