It’s not the athletes or the equipment, it’s the culture. So that’s why.
What are some of the challenges for new coaches to overcome?
The biggest thing is that you just don’t know what you’re going to get from a former athlete. They come from everything. It could be a world class athlete, it could be an Olympic caliber athlete, so you’re coming in from a world of experience. You’re coming in from a world of success that we have in coaching.
That’s a hard lesson to learn from that world. You have to be willing to take whatever it takes to get to where you need to go, and if you believe in what you’re doing, it can help you get there.
What’s the greatest challenge faced by those who aren’t as well-versed in the business of coaching?
The biggest thing is they don’t just have to work with athletes. They have to understand what an elite athlete is doing and how they do in practice and their development as an athlete when they’re doing the same thing in the gym. It’s a lot of work and it’s a lot of hard work. So if they take the time to do that, it means that they actually understand the world in which they’re playing.
For instance, it’s not just about the athlete in the gym. They have to understand what the athlete as an elite athlete is thinking. How they think in the way that they perform. So when you think of something like the butterfly press, you look at someone who can do that and you think that they can do it on some level or maybe they aren’t. You have to have an understanding of how the athlete thinks so you can adjust your teaching accordingly.
What is the next big thing in bodyweight coaching?
There’s a lot more being done in general sports today than ever before. In my opinion, it’s a trend in which the players have become more knowledgeable and the coaches more skilled, and that can be a good thing. The goal of coaches is to help the players to get better and improve by helping them understand what they’re doing, how they’re doing it, their level of proficiency in the sport.
So then that takes us to the next evolution which is that they are becoming more experienced and knowledgeable about the sport, and that can be another great thing, because then you’re going to help them improve.
