Why aren’t they more successful with their players than other sports? Many of us in the know consider failure to be a negative and often chalk it up to uncoordinated and unhelpful coaching.
But coaches rarely know why. They don’t get to know which coaching traits are critical and what is simply what everyone does to win. These players often play into coaches’ hands. But there is no “right” way to coach. There is only a coaching style; the way you teach, and the method you choose as a coach and your methods of evaluation and observation. Your methods are not “right” simply because you believe they are, or because you believe they are “right.”
What are the fundamental coaching methods coaches should use to achieve success?
I like to use two different examples for the two different types of coaches we encounter:
Carry the load of the whole group.
Carry the weight of the group in small, manageable chunks.
Carry the load of the whole group.
In my own coaching group, I’ve found that players and coaches will be much happier if they start with the idea of “carrying the weight” of the entire group. The idea is that the more you carry the load, the worse off you’re going to be. In fact, I know that the best coaches have always made the best coaches, because they have a strong foundation in teaching their players to carry the load of the whole group for themselves.
Carry the weight of the group in tiny chunks.
If you work together, you can probably get the work done. If you don’t, the work you do won’t get done. But the best players are those that are able to create the environment of their own choice that they want to develop themselves. They’ll find their own ways to do the work, but they will also try to take the work that they do and make it their own.
And once they take the work that they do and start building things out in their own spaces, they find they don’t have to carry as much of the load as they might have before.
In the example above, we see the “carry the weight of the whole group” example of carrying the load of the entire group. In this example, the players do the work themselves, but you can get your pieces and your pieces are usually more important than you might hope.
In these examples of “carry the weight of the whole group
