There are a number of ways to get recognized by a school as well as by a league. You can have your transcript and recommendation from a school and then join a team for a season or two while your coach is recruiting and getting you ready, or you can go in and get your coaching certification from the coach and have them put your name up in their class roster while he or she gets you ready for the game.
The way I see it, if you aren’t a member of the NCAA, it doesn’t do you any good to do a lot of traveling. If you aren’t on a team, you’re not a team member. So, it’s better for you to do a couple of years of coaching and then get accepted to a school, sit on the coaching board as a head coach, and then go do some extra travel and do some team scouting. Then you’ll get noticed in some school, and then you can go work for their school on your second year and be able to get a head coaching job in your own league.
Do you go out to try your luck?
Yeah, I do. I do it a lot. My wife actually went to Florida State, so I was lucky that I stayed close to home and I was able to keep tabs on the program.
Do you ever have trouble finding coaches that aren’t necessarily NCAA members? Are things too time-consuming to be successful?
I think I’ve done pretty well for myself with it. If you look at the league and the teams that are currently in league, I’ve definitely had a lot of success. I haven’t really gone and interviewed anybody in the past couple of years but I’m certainly ready to talk to a few coaches who fit what I’d be looking for in a coach. It might take me a year or two to talk to a team but I don’t feel that the time is right to do any of that right now.
The first week of 2017 is underway, as is the year in general. The new year is going to be a busy one for many of us who get to work on projects that take us into other time zones. We’ve had a lot of new software releases this year and some big projects have entered their final stages of preparation.
