To start getting the answer, we need to first figure out our goals and ambitions, a simple goal-setting strategy can help us get to the right place.
I started with a simple question: Should I be working on:
A: To be healthier/looking/fitter
A: To be more confident
or B: To create my confidence
I was surprised to find the latter answer actually led to a much more satisfying goal of focusing on the former, which left me on a more positive note. How much did it help me feel?
What are you actually working towards and why? To make your self-esteem stronger, to help you to feel better, to improve your social interactions, to improve your confidence and so on. What is that?
“How do you define success in life?”, you ask. Well the best answer is that it is all relative. Some people are more successful than others and some people have a higher success rate than others. How good you feel is not something which is absolute by itself – it depends on what you want to achieve.
How many more years do you want to enjoy being healthy and living a healthy lifestyle? Or to gain more confidence? How many more years do you want to achieve the goal of being less worried over your situation and focus on what you can control?
What is something you are really aiming for in life and why? Some want to improve their life skills (work life, social, financial…), others want to make a quick impact (work on business, social work etc), others just want to be a better person (solving problems, spending time with the ones closest to you, doing some good deeds, etc).
There are tons of things that are good, but will you be satisfied with them? Many successful people are very happy with what they already have, they just don’t get too attached to what new goals and dreams are. That is totally understandable too – a change in your life is what attracts you the most. But you don’t have 30 years to make all other goals to become what you want. And if that goal isn’t reached, then what did you really achieve in those 35 years?
To find out your best course of action, we need a clear vision of where we want to go and what challenges we face. We will always have to keep moving forward, in the long run we always get a second chance – but sometimes it will also be too late.
