The first and most important thing to note about the new Star Wars novel, The Last Command, is that it isn’t really a Star Wars novel. It’s a novel set in a prequel continuity, but rather than focusing on the conflict against the First Order, it concentrates on the story of a group of smugglers who run a lucrative crime-smuggling operation. The Last Command, and the novel’s two sequels, are set prior to Return of the Jedi. As such, the story of The Last Command is meant to give us a peek at the story of the Empire through the eyes of the criminals who operate in its shadows.
There’s a lot of history behind the smuggling operation that we’ll cover here, including how a group of smugglers with no real connections to the Empire ended up running a big network of criminal enterprises all across the Outer Rim, dealing in weapons smuggling, and selling stolen tech to criminal organizations around the galaxy. If anyone in the Empire is going to be doing an impressive job of policing the space economy and keeping criminals out, it’ll be them, not the Imperial Knights or the Death Watch.
In the novel, the First Order sends a cadre of First Order stormtroopers to apprehend two rebels who’re about to escape their home planet of Lothal. The First Order doesn’t know who they are, and can’t be sure whether the rebels in question are still alive or not. But they’re sure one of them is a Resistance fighter as the man was seen in a TV news report.
As the stormtroopers approach their target on a stormtrooper ship, they’re met by a bunch of “Lothalites” and a group of smugglers who are also stormtroopers. The stormtroopers don’t like the fact that they’re dealing with a bunch of stormtroopers and go on a rampage, firing everything they see.
