1. They offer some background that will let you know you’ve made the right calls.

The first thing to make sure of when interviewing an investor for a business coach is that they should be able to provide at least some basic background. In short, you need to know how a business has done over your lifetime and if that has had any negative consequences if you ever made a mistake while working with that business. Knowing how a business has gone after all is good, but you also need to know how things have gone well and how things have gone well bad.

2. They can tell you what has worked and what has not.

This doesn’t mean that they won’t try to sell you something, of course there are other things they’re good at, like creating video-based training courses that are worth investing hours to learn, but what they’ve done in the past suggests they can tell you what worked in their business, and are able to tell you exactly how things have gone with their previous project.

3. They’re the type of person that will always be willing to listen.

A good business coach will always be willing to learn about your business and will be the type of person who doesn’t mind giving an honest opinion of an investment. In short, if they’re genuinely interested in the future of your business and your vision/idea for the business, they’ll be a very good business coach they’ll just want to listen to. This might be more a personal trait than talent, but if you’re in your business for any amount of time (even several years) the chances of any business coach listening to you for more than 10 minutes or two hours are pretty slim.

4. They want to help.

This is just as important as their background. When interviewing someone, don’t even bother asking what’s the business’s primary focus, they know as much about the business as the client. Don’t even assume that they know at first what you’re looking for in your business; they’ll always be there to help you with that.

5. They’re more than happy to get advice, and they want you to trust them.
