“Some coaches work longer than that,” notes Brown, a longtime tennis player and occasional coach. “The key to coaching is to make sure they are very organized, because once you are in, that time may be very limited.”
What are some of the most effective ways to coach?
“For best results,” says Brown, noting that a coach needs to be in the moment. “The best ideas are coming from an athlete, from a competitor. I’m constantly impressed by young people learning from others, for instance when someone else tells them to do this.”
What is training like?
“I think the most important element is being positive,” says Brown. “It doesn’t matter if you have training in the garage or when you wake up. If you want to have a good time, you have to train positive. One of the most common questions about coaching – and I know this from first hand experience – are things such as, ‘Why am I here?’ The answer is, ‘I’m here because I want to coach.'”
Is it just about hitting big singles?
“I’ve met some amazing athletes who have a whole body workout,” Brown says. “It isn’t a body workout. They train their whole bodies. They’re very competitive and work for the big singles. I’m happy about that.”
