We don’t ask you to give up your work as a life coach. If you want to make money, you can go to the clubs and teach them how to be an instructor.
But you can’t just be a teacher and say, “I teach yoga.” And that’s not really teaching yoga but being a sales machine for a yoga retailer. If they sell your program, and they get paid for doing that, then that’s great. You’ll get paid some amount of time and some amount of money per week. But if they’re selling a different program that nobody is buying, then it’s more of a risk: they’ll charge you a big premium for it, and it’ll be harder for you to pay off your student.
Do you look at clients’ photos or body types?
No, we don’t.
How do you know, based on your research and observation, that every client you work with on any given day is going to be one with a particular combination of body type and physique?
There is a certain type of client that all of our instructors and consultants look for. They look for good people. The idea is they’re going to work with a good person, and for us doing yoga is going to be a good person.
One of my clients who I’ve been teaching for almost five years was a pretty skinny guy. He was a very active yoga student and had pretty decent nutrition – he had some muscle, but in a very healthy way, with very high energy levels, which makes him very good for a long time yoga teacher.
But we noticed something important about how he trained, and that’s how his body was developed. He trained his body in certain ways that were conducive to developing the perfect body, which he wanted, and those things weren’t in his diet.
So we decided, the best way to help him, as a nutritionist, to say, “You know what? We’re not going to teach you healthy foods. We’re going to teach you the food that is harmful.” He’s been doing yoga since he was a teenager. He started training like the rest of us in 2002, and he was doing some serious weight training. So we went out and did what we could to help him get the body that we wanted.
