If you’re not familiar with the term vibrating tone, it refers to the sound made by a violist when they strike the strings directly on their frets. However, some students think that this type of sound can only be achieved by using the vibrating sound on the back of the bow. That is a misconception, and I won’t go into as much details now as I have done on previous posts here. Instead, let’s jump right into a discussion about how to make the tone you’re after.
First, let’s take a look at what type of instrument vibrates. The type of sound that we’re after is not a specific sound. It’s a tone that we call “buzz.”
Vibrating tone
Vibrating tone does not only refer to the tone made when the top of the bow vibrates through the strings. It also refers to the sound made when the bow is held with the right and left edges of the violin together. Some players have noticed that they can make a different sound when using both sides of the bow together. The bottom part of the violin bow is a combination of several different parts, each of which vibrates slightly differently.
By understanding how vibrating tone works, you can use the left and right edges of the bow together to make the vibration you’re after. When you begin using the vibrating bow, I recommend experimenting by using the left and right edges of the bow together. This will help you understand how these two types of vibration can be used together to create specific, powerful, and distinct tones.
This technique requires a certain level of skill and patience, but it works, and most students feel that it adds a unique dimension to their playing.

As you can see, the vibrating sound is not the only way to create a vibrating tone. It’s not at all a one trick pony. But many of the other vibrations that you can create are much less complex.
