There’s only really one way to answer this question – the way I’m going to play. No other way.
How many minutes do you play a given section per hour?
In our lab and on the road, we play 10-12 hours per week, every day of the week. This includes touring and rehearsals, and it includes time spent on all other parts of the process that aren’t directly involved with playing the music. The total is about 45-50 hours (the same hours my dad played every week).
What I can say to you now is that once I’ve learned a piece, I will play it for hours, often with my whole band in a bar. I will practice hours every day without any rest and with no breaks. It doesn’t matter if the piece is hard or easy. I’ll play every note for no other reason than knowing that I’m going to get one of those “steely eyed moments” where I get this “holy wow” moment, the moment when the pieces really come alive, and it is beyond description.
My friends call these moments “The Holy Wow!” So if you like the name, you’re in the right place.
Now go out and try it out. You’re not going to be the only person who gets this. I promise.
I’m not saying this is a magic solution, but if you’ve enjoyed the experience of “the Holy Wow” from your first performance, now you have this in your repertoire. You may want to try it again, so you’ll have some more ideas to share.
With the exception of some rare circumstances, it’s highly unlikely that a patient will be treated with a surgical procedure unless it produces a substantial improvement in symptoms. In these cases, all of us must be willing to assume that the “improvement” will be transient as we will soon get back on our “normal” pace. In short, the “normalize” that doctors like to recommend is usually not the “normal” pace of life experienced as we are able to live a normal lifestyle. This means that if we want to stop the worsening of symptoms and achieve our “regular” lifestyle there is little hope that our doctor will be able to deliver on our recommendation.
What you do not want is to think that you are going to “go back to normal” or “do everything else normal” because your doctor wants you to. Instead of expecting the cure, you don’t want to want
