What about music and poetry? I have a lot to learn (and I want to keep learning).
For now, I’m learning violin, the best way to learn an instrument. It does give a big advantage over learning a few other languages on a computer, at least at first.
However, music and poetry is the way to get to a lot of what I want out of the world. They’re very similar to language, but more abstract. You know you’re trying to get a lot of information when you’re doing math problems: you need to use more complex logic than you need on a computer.
How much knowledge do I need? I don’t have one or two thousand years worth (though I don’t regret my decisions not to study in high school, which is why I can’t be a professor, I’ll just make a little money). You could ask me a question, even from a distance, and I will reply to you in a very straightforward way.
I don’t remember my childhood. I lived through the Cold War, in one time in history, and I don’t know why I have so little contact with it.
What’s the biggest difference between myself as a musician and my childhood self as a nonmusician? It’s hard for me to explain without talking about my past. There’s a lot of music in my life so maybe it doesn’t apply to you, but I know I was a musician as a kid, and it’s important for me to talk about it. It also helps me talk about it in general.
I don’t listen to much music anymore, except for things from the 1950s. (Music today is so much more than music in the 1950s, but I am aware of it.) I used to be the fan of the 1950s music, but I started listening to rock music with my high school band, and I can’t listen to it anymore. I don’t have anything against rock. All music matters to me, as long as there are no political messages in it.
I do listen to music on the Internet. The music I do, or at least the music I am curious about, is generally progressive and not experimental. In that way, I think most music is progressive. If I can say so in one sentence, I will never get into any other kind of music.
