I mean to ask you that is the ultimate question. I have to try. I’m really fascinated by what people do in their spare time. How much does music take from you, or from yourself? How much of yourself can you get from it? And to tell me there is a reason why people do it. Because I’m the one who is interested. It’s why it is interesting to me. I get the greatest pleasure in doing it. I love learning a new instrument. A new instrument in itself makes me happy. I think that’s it. Yes or no. In the long run it’s always going to have to be yes.
I’ve been doing something for a long time that I can’t really describe, that I can’t really make any sense of.
It’s like a dance. It kind of happens spontaneously to me on the street, wherever I go, every single day. It’s a kind of ecstasy. I can dance around for hours and hours and hours. It’s a lot like music. It’s like playing a rhythm. But my experience of dancing is always a little bit more personal because it’s more spontaneous. It’s not something that’s planned out, or something that you’ve done every night. It’s very individual.
I remember one day playing violins in one of the bars in Barcelona: it’s a great place, a very lively place. And I said, “I hope I don’t break a string.” And there I was in a bar with all my violins and a bottle of wine and a bottle of cognac in my hand. And on the other hand I was surrounded by people playing. I just happened to be there, and they all looked at me. And then I decided that was cool. I said, “Okay, it’s going to be my pleasure to be there.” This thing is kind of fun to do. It is quite fun.
It’s one of those things where you see it in someone else, and they see it in you. In my case, I’m a little bit of a perfectionist, I’m a little bit of a hard-nosed person. I love making things. I have a good way of working out of it. I will put an end to a work and keep working on it. I do that all the time with new work, where I’ll take a piece and put it on a shelf and then I’ll look at it every day of a few weeks and see what I can improve on.
