I doubt it, but what about any other instrument? (In fact, I don’t even know how to play a trombone). There are exceptions for some people, but for the most part, most young piano players don’t need to play in order to learn the piano (and I guess for many non-pianists, the piano still isn’t important for their musical development). I’d say it would be much more efficient for students to just watch people learn the piano and try to duplicate what they do best.
I’d also argue that we should be encouraging students to learn the piano so it will be a more important skill for people’s lives rather than a passing obsession for people once they’re in college. I’d also argue that this will be the case whether or not this method is successful, but let’s talk about that later.
What should your students focus on? In my experience, most students are just learning to do some part of music, such as read music, play the piano or play guitar while they learn other skills. To me it seemed more important for students to focus in on other things, such as getting good at speaking English (or reading, I guess), reading foreign languages (especially French), and doing some other stuff.
What’s the best way to teach them the piano?
I think learning piano (and other musical instruments) requires learning how to be a consistent learner over time. The best way to do that is to teach people how to perform in a specific style rather than learning everything at once. That way, you can pick and choose what you want to teach people to do and then encourage them to do it, with their experience and abilities, over time.
I’d argue that teaching in a specific style can help your students get a lot more done over time, as well as give you an idea of how they’re doing. For example, if a student is performing very bad Italian music and you don’t know what to do about it, having them memorize the entire language over time might be more effective than simply having them play bad Italian a bunch (and then letting them learn it again). Likewise, having them learn a certain style or genre of music would encourage you to make them practice that style or genre over time, for more success in learning it.
