The one I use for every picture has this awesome feature that’s called “high contrast saturation”. It makes my pictures look different than they are. I use this feature to get that ‘bumpy’ feeling from my photos. I thought it was weird (I use a D8) and I never thought about it until I finally did it. So that’s great.
This post is inspired in the same way as my first post on the subject a while back. Maybe I’m way off track there, but to be honest, I still use a D850 camera. I’ve been shooting for 4 years now, but I’ve never made an announcement in my life. I have, however, talked about a potential move to a larger, DSLR-sized camera, but with the exception of the Fuji X-E1 which is a dream, I haven’t made it. Maybe that’s part of the reason. Regardless, I still do everything possible to keep my photography as close to the original medium as possible.
What are your thoughts on the color space of your pictures?
Color space is a really big deal for us. This whole “bigger is better” idea can be kind of scary to photographers. There’s a lot of “this is better than this” thinking going on. We think that, if we change the color space, all our images will look like perfect images. And we’re wrong. The reality is that the way we’re working — the way I’m working — can have a huge impact on how our images look. The one I’m using right now, with a black and white sensor, works better for me than one shooting with a DCI-P3 color space. It also takes a little more work to get to that point.
The thing with changing the color space is, when you do it, the other parts have to be adapted to match it. So the other parts become slightly darker which makes the image look a little more saturated. That’s what happens when you change the color space.
There was also, when I was shooting with a DCI-P3 color space, that when I did the “bigger is better” thing, it made my images darker and more saturated than just shooting with a black and white sensor.
