The answer? It is a C. If you sing any standard or song, or any major chord or scale, your C will be played.
The following scale is the key of my home – it is based on the A major scale but has been simplified. It is the scale that I sing “Happy Birthday, My Friend”, “How Sweet It Is To Be Free, (the theme from The Nutcracker)”, “It’s A Wonderful World To Be In”, “The Greatest Highwayman In The World” and “The First Time I Saw Your Face”.
How is the key of the home (C) the highest? It sounds just like the A major scale. However, most people who are aware of the difference between C and A don’t notice any difference at all when practicing. It’s the lower notes that are a little harder than the higher notes. Therefore, if you can sing the standard or song, it will seem as if you are higher in the key.
It is also important to have a good ear for all the notes in a key and be aware of which chord in the key you are in. I recommend it whenever you’re practicing. Listen to what is being played and how it is playing into other chords.
My personal preference is to use my C when I am playing standard music, or any standard or song. I find using a C when imitating a song works just as well as playing standard music.
