Vocal cords (the muscles running along one side of the mouth) are made of muscles called vocal folds. The muscles that are used to make the voice are called vocal folds, which are about a foot long and shaped like a small flower or a rose. When you sing and breathe, the tongue and lips are closed. These lips work like a valve so that when you breathe in, the lungs get a push of air, so there are small airways in each of the vocal folds. If you open and close the lips, the air is pushed into that space between the vocal folds, and then comes out out of the mouth on its own when you breathe out.

The tongue is in between the lips, and the teeth are pressed against the roof of the mouth. When you breathe, it pushes air into the mouth through this valve.
