No! Even a singer cannot lead a congregation without the need to perform the songs, for the singer’s voice is like the wind, passing through the congregation without being seen by those who do not know God. You heard the example of Moses and Aaron in the desert, the two pillars that carry the weight of the congregation, and they went back to Mount Sinai to pray after their absence. After all, Moses had been leading the congregation to the mountain, but Aaron, a humble man, was able to go to the mountain alone, and by the power of God Moses had seen their names, which were a mighty sign for the congregation. As He taught his children through faith, so He has revealed His name and authority in the name of the Most High to His faithful servants, who are the prophets who are to prophesy in the name of God!
Abu Hurairah (RA) used to say: It is haram to hear a great musician who has passed away from his glory, but it is not haram to hear a humble singer.
We know that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever listens to a singing artist will never enter Paradise.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Anybody who hears singing, hears Allah’s name. As for a person who sings, he hears Allah’s name. But the one who listens to a prophet who has passed away, who is like Moses, Aaron and Jacob, who are the pillars of the congregation, has no such hope, but he will be a wretched person and he will go to hell.
Ishmael ibn Marwan (RA) used to say: There is nothing worse than hearing a humble singer, for it is impossible for a prophet to perform the salaha, meaning to bring good news for a community (i.e. the world). It is better, and more pleasing to Allah, that a humble singer, who is the greatest of singers, should not lead the congregation.
There is no doubt that a singer, whose voice has gone out during the salha is like one who is blind and deaf and when he reaches the level of deafness, he cannot bring another ray of hope and knowledge. For the poor human being, even if he gets a good hearing, he cannot be able to see his Creator, as long as a good singer does not bring it to the audience. As for a person who has gone to Hell, if he goes there, Allah has told him:
