“Well, don’t worry about it, Miki,” I said. “You can call me Jekyll. And I’ll even go with the first thing that comes to mind. ‘My friend, Jekyll, wants to be like me and do things that are opposite of me, and so my friend, Jekyll, does the opposite of me, which is exactly my friend, Jekyll, wants to be like the opposite of the opposite of me. But I’m not going to do that at all, because that wouldn’t be like me.”
“Um… Is he a jerk?”
A long pause. Miki shrugged, feeling the way her eyes burned as I spoke. Then I sighed, as if I was trying on a new coat. “He’s always been a jerk, but this is his time to be a jerk. I’m sure he’ll work out some kind of arrangement that means I can help him achieve his dreams. He could make a pretty good playboy. Or he could just be a complete disappointment, which… I really don’t know what I’d do with myself if I saw him without the skirt.”
“It’s not like…” I said, trailing off. I glanced over to Aya. She was watching me intently, her eyes flicking down from the pages at the back of her book so I could see the details of the painting.
