Does it really happen?
My wife and I are both pretty experienced in the art of singing, but have never been to a show that featured a performance of great singers. I have always found classical music attractive from a musical point of view, but never as a way to relax. At first, I dismissed that idea; it just didn’t sound like much fun. It doesn’t have to be about music. If you enjoy watching movies or seeing a good show, you can enjoy great singing too.
I went to an early evening show at The Lyric Theatre in San Francisco a week ago. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by the performance of the great Michael Buble at the top of his game. I loved a particular scene where he sang “My Generation.” It was a wonderful song, but I have a feeling that my wife would be appalled at my decision to watch the performance.
I have been doing that for 50 years. I remember it so well as a boy, when the great Jerry Lee Lewis was performing on Broadway and Jerry was a boy. I had to get up at 6 to sing in one of his shows.
A lot of people, myself included, are too shy to go see classical music. At home, I have always had a lot of classical music on my computer. I listen to it every day. I will be sure to bring it with me to a concert, whenever one comes to New York.
My wife and I go to a lot of shows together. Our favorite is probably “Cats,” where the singers are great dancers and the music good. My wife and I have not yet been to one where the singers are mediocre. I don’t know if that’s possible. When I was a boy, I remember seeing a lot of singers in other concerts at the Lyric, but none of them were excellent or great. So maybe that’s what we should be looking for at a concert.
My wife is particularly impressed with Michael Buble. Her first impression of Buble may be that he looks like a young Frank Sinatra or a middle-aged Paul Simon. But his song “Don’t Go, Don’t Tell Me” may just be the best of his whole career. Buble has been singing, in his way, since age 7. He has no talent — just his personality and the music. His songs are so memorable because of his personal touch. And his music is so beautiful because he is just great.
