Possible Causes of High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is a fairly common cause of high cholesterol (the main cause of heart disease). It’s a more severe form of the disease than is caused by plaque forming in artery walls, and causes a whole lot more heart disease. High blood pressure is a major predictor of the amount of plaque in your arteries. The plaque builds up in various forms, but plaque is the most common form of blood vessel disease (as in atherosclerosis).
High blood pressure can also occur from conditions other than heart disease, although they mostly don’t cause blood vessel disease. These include obesity, a thyroid condition, and a genetic factor called the APOE gene. The APOE gene acts like a master switch that causes any person with it to have higher blood pressure than any person without it. Even someone who has never had a family history of high blood pressure cannot have it. The APOE gene was discovered by chance and was discovered over 100 years ago.
How is Heart Disease Influenced?
Although no drug can be used to cure or prevent heart disease, the main reason to take medications is to lower blood pressure and prevent strokes. The major problem for treating low blood pressure is preventing blood from falling out of the blood vessels.
There are many drugs that can lower blood pressure to a certain level, but only one medication can make a difference for high blood pressure. That is called statins, which contain a molecule called a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in addition to other chemicals that reduce inflammation, like ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, or naproxen, among others. Because the NSAID is used in combination with statins, the combination can lower the blood pressure dramatically. This is the reason you often see anti-inflammatory medication, such as steroids or ibuprofen, in the form of over-the-counter or prescription drugs.
