(Yes, that was the question I asked, but also the correct question to ask.) It’s really as simple as that.
But if you look at the “pregnancy, fertility, and abortion” statistics in the UK, you’ll soon see the differences are enormous:
In 2007, around 5,000 abortions were carried out in the UK each year, with a total of around 8,000 in 2008, 2,000 in 2009, and almost 4,000 in 2010. (For perspective, around 10% of births happen in the same period.) In 2000, about 4,400 abortions were carried out in the UK, with a total of around 7,000 in 2006, 2,000 in 2007, and 2,000 in 2011. In 2000, less than 10% of UK births happened in the same period, and only 2% happened in 2010, the year they were supposed to begin. This is the same chart for abortion figures by county.
So what are the major trends there? First off, for each of the years shown here (which have a total of 3) in UK, about 35% of the births (in the UK) happen in the same time frame, and about 8% happen in the middle (in 2005, 2006, 2007). The middle category is where we’ve actually gotten to in the US — mostly mid-range. Here, the middle category isn’t very big, but even there we’ve been getting a little bit better in 2010, and a little bit worse in 2007. But the biggest trend we’ve seen, by far, is abortion by age group, and not just birth year. For some obvious reasons — no age group is exactly the same from year to year — we’ve got much fewer older women having abortions than young women, and many many more young women having abortions than older women.
The abortion rate was very, very bad by age group in the US. In 2007, for example, 30.2% of women under the age of 35 were having abortions. So this looks awful much earlier, but is a lot worse than it is. This is actually a sign that if we have a big increase in abortions by age, this is an indication of an increased number of young women choosing to have abortions. The actual ratio of abortion rates to birth rates is much lower than the 25–15–5 rate is, because many young women can’t afford the pregnancy insurance that the average middle-aged woman can.
