“The thing about twerking is it’s not about the physicality, it’s also a performance technique,” says Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. “There’s a certain mental preparation that I do to get into it, and you really feel like this is your physical outlet and you can do that any time you want. It can really be physical, whether it’s taking a tumble onstage or even jumping around onstage. In the end it’s really about the feelings so you can just go with it.”
The band’s new album ‘Feeling Good’, released last week, has been well received, with ‘Feels So Good’ winning at Best Rock Album at this year’s Grammy Awards. The latest single ‘Tender’ was also well-received, winning Best Pop Song at this year’s MTV EMAs.
Parker, who is also an accomplished gymnast, has a strong connection to twerking because his father, Robert, ran a chain of gymnastics centres in Bristol.
“My dad was really adamant twerking was a movement or a sport, not this weird thing like it is now.”
When asked about the twerking trend, Parker explains, “You have to start by not looking at it but rather looking at it as a whole.”
Parker has been doing it for over a decade already; he started out with hip hop, dance moves such as the backflip and backflip and started becoming a “thick” twerker, which was then picked up by punk bands and then, of course, EDM. “It used to be the only way to get music gigs,” says Parker. “As much as I love the stuff like Twizzlers and that kind of thing – which you probably get more money from twerking for that – there’s a lot of people that actually take their music more seriously. It’s not like I’m trying to go viral or something. I’m really into my music.”
Parker also admits that he had to make a transition as twerk came to the forefront of mainstream news. “That was when people started posting twerking-related information all the time. I was like, ‘Oh, my fucking god.’ I thought, ‘Oh, these people know who I am’. You have to know who you are and this was a lot more fun.”
He also says it gave him the chance to do things he would have never done otherwise. ”
