No. It isn’t.
And, of course, most of the women and girls who do belly dancing are very young. Many only start doing belly dancing later in life.
As I’ve explained before, there’s a lot of confusion surrounding belly dancing. (I’ve also done a whole article on belly dancing and how to find a good belly dancing instructor.)
So, let me break down the basics of belly dancing for you.
If your goal is a great stomach, you should be very familiar with the core (what is this thing? What muscles run up and down your stomach?) You should also be at least moderately experienced with yoga, dance, and other kinds of bodywork that involve flexibility, and you should be in good shape if you’re an athlete like I use to be.
I won’t lie to you. I would love to provide you with a free, “instant yoga routine” that will take your breath away.
Let me instead show you what belly dancing is all about.
What Do You Want to Look Like?
If you’re looking to give yourself a little fun, or do yoga (or dance) during your weeknight tummy time, you’ll want to focus on your core.
It’s okay if you can’t give a presentation about what your core is doing.
But it’s not okay to just lie there in your mat while all these other people try to squeeze to the floor in front of you. It’s not OKAY.
Instead, you want to focus on your core (this is really all you need to know about what is going on with your body while you belly dance), and you want to focus on it with a little excitement by using some of these three core muscles: your glutes, hips, and hamstrings.
To me, it takes about ten to fifteen minutes to teach core breathing, and then you get to do it when you want.
These three muscles are key to making the moves from belly dancing, back-scratching, and all of the moves that can come from all sorts of body work.
They are the secret to belly dancing. This is a secret.
For all of those of you who love belly dancing and want to make it as a career, I have a simple “How to Get Started” for you to follow so you can start out, at the very first class, while having plenty of fun.
