No! I know it sounds like I’m putting this on a lot, but I don’t. I’m not trying to be all wimpy — I’m just really excited to share what my family does with our girls and my girls can really see it, and then they can see that I’m not an outlier at all. No, they can have some fun with their bodies, without even knowing that they have to become skinny to belly dance.
Are parents aware that they have a role in encouraging this?
I would say parents usually are the ones pushing them to get skinny. If their kids haven’t got a passion about dance or singing or dance like these girls do, it’s because they haven’t had any parents who’ve pushed them to try or encouraged them to go to dance. Those parents just get really discouraged.
Do you feel differently about becoming a belly dancer after talking with your mom?
I did this all by myself…I did it on my own, because it’s not something that my parents encouraged. But, in her conversation, she just encouraged me to move on with my life, because it’s part of her job, too, to make people move in dance. So, maybe now that I can be more outspoken about it, she supports me just enough so if they do move, they can continue to do that. My mom just kind of supported and encouraged it. She’s so excited.
A few months ago, a fellow reader wrote me with a suggestion.
I am a little uncomfortable with it, but if I remember correctly, we used to keep that little piece of paper in every episode of “The Simpsons.”
And for many seasons, that was the best way to make sure we got the proper characters and situations correctly.
I was wondering if I might make a little poster for those days, maybe to hang on the wall for our “Marge Gets Married” night. And, if it was so convenient to record that the characters we liked knew exactly where the wedding was, we may actually do it that way.
Anyway, if you are going to follow my logic, this might be a good time to remind yourself that this is real life, and there are real life people that get to see a wedding when it is on TV.
